Brazilian president's high approval rating helps his party's presidential candidate, Dilma Rousseff, to lead in the latest poll on the upcoming presidential election in the country.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's approval rate of around 80 percent helped the Workers Party presidential candidate widen her lead in the latest poll on the first round of the country's next election, winning more than 50 percent of votes.

Rousseff, who is Lula's personal choice, worked as an energy policymaker in the southern State of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2002 she joined Lula's presidential campaign and was chosen to become energy minister. Later in June 2005 she was appointed by Lula as the chief of staff.

Rousseff's main contender in the October 3 election is Jose Serra, who represents right wing spectrum in Brazil, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Serra who is trailing behind Rousseff — rating in polls on 25 percent — has accused government officials of corruption.

Lula however has denied the accusations, distancing himself from all suspected of misconduct.

In his two terms of presidency, Lula has changed Brazil's social landscape largely with improving income distribution and boosting the country's economy.
