Japan, China: Secret Deal On Disputed Islands ViolatedOctober 18, 2010 Recent tensions over the Senkaku/Diaoyu island chain in the East China Sea have emerged because Japan’s ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) government unwittingly violated a secret agreement between China and Japan on managing the islands, according to Japan’s Aera magazine, AFP reported Oct. 18. Japan’s previous Liberal Democratic Party-led governments had a deal with China under which emergency situations involving the island would be managed, and the DPJ had no knowledge of the deal, according to a government source quoted by Aera. |
